TED Talks: Conclusion

1. My favorite TED Talk: My favorite TED Talk was Success, Failure, and the Drive to Keep Creating by Elizabeth Gilbert. 

2. Why it's my favorite: This was my favorite TED Talk because I loved how the author shared her story of how she had to really fail in order to later succeed in life. I though that it was a really awesome story as well as a great life lesson.

3. Most important thing I learned: The most important thing that I learned from this Talk was that you have to experience failures in order to really appreciate succeeding.

4. My overall opinion: Overall, I enjoyed TED Talks. While at times I found it hard to find the extra time to do them I think that they exposed me to a huge new trend and I think that I will be able to really refer to them later on in my educational research.

5. My own TED Talk: If TED approached me to do a TED Talk I think that I would talk about the importance of learning to understand people. I have learned through my own experience as a hair stylists that when you take the time to learn other people's story they become more open and very loyal to you. People just need someone to listen to what they have to say - when you do they will be forever grateful and treat you with a new-found respect.

5. Summary of the Talk: With help from some surprising footage, Derek Sivers explains how movements really get started. (Hint: it takes two.) In under three minutes Derek Sivers explains how to be a leader and start a movement.

6. Interesting Things I Learned from the Talk: Something interesting I learned from this talk was that it takes "one lone nut to make a leader." New followers emulate followers - not leaders.

7. Evaluation of the Presenter: I felt that Derek Sivers took on a big risk trying to take on such a broad topic in only three minutes. The funny video he chose to show while doing his talk really gave his viewers something to relate to.

8. Evaluation of the Talk: Overall, I enjoyed this talk because I think that in just three minutes Derek Sivers hit all of the point on what it takes to be a leader and stand out to make a movement. Really marketing yourself and what you believe in a getting people to believe with you is really all that it takes.

TED Talks: Technology

1. Title: Don't Like Clickbait? Don't Click.

2. Speaker: Sally Kohn

5. Summary of the Talk: News analyst Sally Kohn suggests — don't engage with news that looks like it just wants to make you mad. Instead, give your precious clicks to the news sites you truly trust.

6. Interesting Things I Learned from the Talk: Something interesting that I learned from this TED Talk it is twice as likely for you to be a victim of nasty personal attacks from others on the internet if you are a woman, person of color, gay, or more than more of those.

7. Evaluation of the Presenter: I enjoyed Sally Kohn as a TED Talks presenter. I think that what she has to say about nasty attacks on the internet really is relevant in today's time when so many people are victims of cyber bullying.

8. Evaluation of the Talk: Overall I think this was a really interesting talk. Sally Kohn talks about changing the way we click. A few powerful elites control the media and the rest of us are just passive consumers. Browsing the web and enjoying social media is a public act of making media, and we are the new editors who get to decide what we give our attention to.

TED Talks: Leadership

1. Title: Everyday Leadership

2. Speaker: Drew Dudley

5. Summary of the Talk: We have all changed someone’s life — usually without even realizing it. In this funny talk, Drew Dudley calls on all of us to celebrate leadership as the everyday act of improving each other’s lives.

6. Interesting Things I Learned from the Talk: People have taken the concept of leaderships and turned it into a meaning that requires you to change the world. Instead of letting ourselves feel good about ourselves for doing little acts of leadership we play them down to not come across as cocky or arrogant.

7. Evaluation of the Presenter: I was very impressed with Drew Dudley. He was an awesome presenter that was very easy to listen to. He brings humor into his discussion about leadership so that it captivates his audience and draws them into what he is saying.

8. Evaluation of the Talk: Overall, I really liked this TED Talk. I enjoyed his stories and I really liked what he had to say about how important it is to let yourself be proud of your moments of leadership. He talked about how you should praise those people who have been leaders of small moments in your life and I really think that is a great concept.

TED Talks: Humor

1. Title: Are You Human?

2. Speaker: Ze Frank

3. Presentation Date: 03/2014

5. Summary of the Talk: Ze Frank suggests humorous series of simple questions that will determine exactly how 'human' you are. These questions are based around funny and embarrassing things that the human race does that we don't recognize until brought to our attention. He also called to mind habits and things we do that people need to accept because we are in deed, 'human'.

6. Interesting Things I Learned from the Talk: Something that I found interesting, and actually quite amusing, from this talk was the amount of people in the audience that were admitting to the very embarrassing human habits that the author discussed - like picking your nose in adulthood.

7. Evaluation of the Presenter: To be honest, at the beginning of this talk I thought the author to be a little strange. By the end of the short talk I became more impressed with his ability to turn what started as a humorous talk into a more seriously and reflective one. He was able to do this seamlessly. 

8. Evaluation of the Talk: Overall, I thought this was a good talk. I think that the author did a good job of capturing the attention of viewers through comedy at the beginning then shifting into a more serious mode after they were tuned in.

TED Talks: Design

1. Title: My life in typefaces

2. Speaker: Matthew Carter

3. Presentation Date: March 2014

5. Summary of the Talk: This talks is about the connection between technology and design and type face. It discusses how over time technology has adapted and the character that you could once find in hand drawn type face art has been replaced by straight lines and less life. 

6. Interesting Things I Learned from the Talk: Something interesting I learned from this talk is the evolution of metal type to photo type brought one particular draw back - a spacing system that only provided for 18 units for letters to be accommodated on. Arithmetically, this only allows for variances of three san serif .

7. Evaluation of the Presenter: Matthew Carter is a very knowledgable and gifted type designer. It is very evident after watching his TED Talk that Matthew Carter is very passionately about type face. I thought that he was a great presenter.

8. Evaluation of the Talk: This TED Talk didn't end up being quite as interesting as I had hoped for, but I did learn a lot of valuable information front the discussion. I feel that I can better relate to this talk because of this course. It helped me to be able to follow along with what the speaker was talking about. Overall, the Talk was fair.

1. Title: The Curly Fry Conundrum: Why Social Media “likes” Say More Than You Might Think

2. Speaker: Jennifer Golbeck

5. Summary of the Talk: Jennifer Golbeck explains how the social media phenomenon of "liking" things on Facebook can help others guess things about you from these random Likes and Shares. As a computer scientist, Jennifer discusses how some applications of the technology are not so cute — and why she thinks we should return the control of information to its rightful owners.

6. Interesting Things I Learned from the Talk: Computer scientists work to collect information from only the content that you "like" on Facebook to establish a behavioral analysis. This can include non-obvious indicators, an example given is how store detect that a woman is pregnant because she is buying more vitamins (among other indicators). They can detect this so accurately that they can even determine when the woman's due date is.

7. Evaluation of the Presenter: Jennifer Golbeck is very knowledgeable and I enjoyed listening to her TED Talk. Her sense of humor that she uses why also giving you interesting information makes her very easy to listen to.

8. Evaluation of the Talk: I found this talk very interesting because as a user of social media I am always interested in how I can have more control over the information that is put out for everyone to see.
